About Sinharaja

Sinharaja Forest Reserve – The Primeval Rainforest

Sinharaja, meaning 'Lion Kingdom', is Sri Lanka's last major viable area of primary tropical rainforest. Designated as a Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this dense, emerald-green jungle is a global biodiversity hotspot of immense ecological importance. The forest's canopy is towering, blocking much of the sunlight and creating a cool, damp environment teeming with life at every level.

The true marvel of Sinharaja lies in its extraordinary level of endemism. Over 60% of its trees are found nowhere else on earth, and it is a sanctuary for rare endemic birds, mammals, insects, and reptiles. Birdwatching here is world-class, especially witnessing the phenomenon of 'mixed-species feeding flocks', where different bird species travel and forage together through the canopy. The elusive purple-faced langur and the glowing green pit viper are also notable residents.

Exploring Sinharaja is done entirely on foot with the guidance of an experienced tracker. Paths navigate through thick vegetation, across crystal-clear streams, and past tumbling waterfalls where hikers can bathe. With the constant chorus of cicadas and the occasional call of a rare bird, trekking through Sinharaja is a profound immersion into untouched, ancient nature.
