About Yala National Park
Yala National Park – Sri Lanka's Premier Leopard Sanctuary
Yala National Park, situated in the southeastern corner of Sri Lanka, is the country’s most famous and second-largest wildlife sanctuary. Renowned for its incredible biodiversity, the park features a diverse landscape ranging from dense monsoon forests and open parks to scrub jungle, freshwater lakes, and untouched coastlines. This varied habitat supports a vast array of wildlife, making it a premier destination for nature enthusiasts.
The park’s main attraction is its impressive population of Sri Lankan leopards; Yala is widely considered to have one of the highest leopard densities in the world, offering visitors a remarkable chance to spot these elusive big cats in the wild. Alongside leopards, the park is home to herds of roaming elephants, sloth bears, wild water buffalo, crocodiles, and over 200 species of birds, including vibrant peaflowers and rare hornbills.
A jeep safari through Yala provides a thrilling adventure, especially during the early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active. Many tours end near the coast, where the jungle meets the sea, offering stunning sunset views. While exploring, visitors can also pass by ancient monastic ruins hidden within the park, adding a touch of history to this untamed natural wilderness.
