About Wilpattu

Wilpattu National Park – The Land of Lakes and Leopards

Wilpattu is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, located on the northwest coast. Its name translates to "Land of Lakes," perfectly describing its unique topography characterized by nearly 60 natural sand-rimmed water basins, known as 'villus'. These rain-fed lakes attract abundant wildlife, especially during periods of drought, offering phenomenal viewing opportunities in a breathtaking, densely forested setting.

Unlike the busier parks in the south, Wilpattu provides a deeply immersive, tranquil safari experience. The dense scrub jungle and ancient forest canopy make spotting wildlife more challenging but profoundly rewarding. It is one of the top locations on the island to spot the majestic Sri Lankan leopard and the elusive sloth bear. The park is also home to herds of spotted deer, elephants, water buffalo, and an incredible variety of wetland bird species.

The park also holds historical significance; legend has it that Prince Vijaya, the founding father of the Sinhalese race, landed near Wilpattu in 543 BC. Ancient ruins and remnants of early settlements can occasionally be spotted amidst the foliage. A journey into Wilpattu is a true wilderness adventure, offering raw, uncrowded encounters with nature.
