About Wellawaya

Wellawaya – The Undiscovered Nature Hub

Wellawaya is a serene, off-the-beaten-path town located at the base of the central highlands, acting as the rural crossroads where the cool mountains descend unto the dry southern plains. Primarily an agricultural center bordered by dense jungles and national parks, it offers a fascinating glimpse into authentic, rural Sri Lankan life. It is the perfect destination for intrepid travelers looking to escape the conventional tourist trail and immerse themselves in pristine nature.

The area is surrounded by some of the island's most spectacular and less-frequented waterfalls, including the towering Diyaluma Falls—Sri Lanka's second highest—where adventurous hikers can climb to natural rock pools at the summit for a refreshing swim with panoramic views. The region is also dotted with ancient, hidden Buddhist monuments, such as the Buduruwagala Rock Carvings, which feature massive, incredibly detailed 10th-century statues of the Buddha carved directly into a cliff face deep in the jungle.

Wellawaya serves as an excellent, less crowded base for safaris into nearby Lunugamvehera and Yala National Parks. Agricultural tourism is also growing here, allowing visitors to cycle through endless paddy fields, observe traditional farming techniques, and enjoy farm-to-table dining experiences featuring fresh, local produce. Wellawaya offers raw, untouched beauty and deep tranquility.
