About Udawalawe
Udawalawe National Park – The Domain of the Asian Elephant
Udawalawe National Park is an expansive sanctuary in southern Sri Lanka, renowned as one of the best places in the world to observe wild Asian elephants. Created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, the park's landscape is defined by light vegetation, grasslands, and scattered scrub. This open terrain makes wildlife viewing exceptionally easy, guaranteeing elephant sightings on nearly every safari.
Herds of elephants, sometimes numbering up to 50 individuals, can be seen feeding, bathing in the reservoir, and interacting with their young. Besides the iconic elephants, the park is home to water buffalo, spotted deer, wild boar, and occasionally, the elusive leopard. The reservoir itself attracts a spectacular array of water birds, including pelicans, painted storks, and majestic birds of prey.
A core highlight of visiting the area is the Elephant Transit Home, an inspiring conservation facility located on the edge of the park. Here, orphaned elephant calves are rehabilitated and eventually released back into the wild. Watching the calves being fed during public viewing hours is a heartwarming experience. Udawalawe offers an intimate and authentic wildlife encounter, making it a pivotal stop for nature enthusiasts.
