Habarana – The Heart of the Cultural Triangle

Habarana is a small, centrally located town that serves as the strategic nexus for exploring Sri Lanka's famed Cultural Triangle. While the town itself is modest, it is surrounded by serene lakes, lush forests, and expansive national parks, offering an idyllic, nature-filled base camp. The primary attraction within Habarana is its unparalleled access to wildlife safaris, particularly in the adjacent Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks. During the dry season (roughly July to October), the receding waters of the Minneriya tank trigger "The Gathering"—the largest seasonal meeting of Asian elephants in the world. Visitors can witness hundreds of elephants converging on the fresh grass, socializing, bathing, and grazing in a spectacular natural phenomenon.
