About Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura – The Sacred Ancient Capital
Anuradhapura was the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka, standing as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. As a flourishing center of Theravada Buddhism for centuries, it covers a vast area filled with monumental ruins that evoke the grandeur of a highly sophisticated ancient civilization. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a profound pilgrimage destination for Buddhists and a fascinating archaeological park for history enthusiasts.
The city is dominated by massive, dome-shaped stupas (dagobas), built from millions of baked bricks. The Ruwanwelisaya and the soaring Jetavanaramaya are awe-inspiring in their sheer scale. Culturally, the beating heart of Anuradhapura is the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree grown from a cutting of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. It is considered the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world, constantly tended to by monks and pilgrims.
Beyond its religious monuments, Anuradhapura showcases ancient Sri Lankan engineering brilliance through its complex irrigation systems and massive man-made reservoirs (tanks) that still sustain the region today. Exploring the ancient city by bicycle under the shade of giant tropical trees offers a serene and deeply moving journey back through thousands of years of history.
